Across the UK, men’s mental and physical health is unacceptably poor – with around one man in five dying before the age of 65. COVID has worsened the situation with completely disproportionate effects amongst men from various backgrounds.

In a recent report published by the Men’s Health Forum the biggest causes of death were discussed. In 2020, 19% of UK male deaths were around one in five – before the age of 65 resulting in the following statistics.
- 75% of deaths from suicide – with suicide the biggest cause of male death under 50
- 76% of premature deaths from heart disease
- 43% more likely to die from cancer
- 63% of premature deaths from COVID
- 26% more likely to have type 2 diabetes and 68.5% of diabetic amputations
- 66% of alcohol-related death
As the statistics show suicide and heart disease are extremely threatening to men’s health. In addition, prostate and testicular cancer are the two biggest killers, if left untreated, which is why early preventative measures and screening are vitally important.
Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer amongst men in the UK, with 1.4 million cases being diagnosed yearly worldwide. When prostate cancer cells are left untreated, they can spread and invade other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, and bones producing secondary tumors.
Testicular cancer is the number 1 cancer among young men, and yet 62% of those who are most at risk don’t know how to check themselves. Checking the testicles monthly or every couple of months can help detect any unusual lumps.
Mental health issues in men is also a rising concern and should not be seen as less significant than physical health issues. Worldwide, every minute of every day a man kills himself, that is over 510,000 deaths per annum. Sadly, men are disproportionately affected by suicide, with three out of four suicides being men.
Spotting the signs of mental health issues can save lives. Men inherently find it difficult to talk about their feelings so finding positive ways to open communications between a loved one, friend or spouse is crucial.
